以前紐約有一條9th Avenue（第九大道）高架鐵道。因為從這裡之北第九大道變成小丘，所以為了免著鐵路上山，在110th Street鐵道曲上東，到了第八大道之後才繼續北上。這張照片是110th Street和9th Avenue十字路口的南東轉角。一看就知道，在路旁都沒有高高的大樓。大樓都在較後面，然後它們的形狀有一點奇怪。像建築要避免到轉角一樣。這就是因為以前這裡有高架鐵道，到現在還是這樣！有時候歷史是我們看得見的！

Here we are looking at the southeast corner of 110th street and Columbus Avenue.  The 9th Avenue elevated line used to pass through here.  9th Avenue (Columbus Ave south of 110th and Morningside Drive north of 110th) goes up a big hill at this point, so to avoid that they had the elevated line turn east for two blocks and continue north on Frederick Douglass Boulevard (8th Avenue).  Because the line made a turn, the buildings on the corner couldn't be built up too tall.  We can still see this in the shape of the buildings on this corner today.  Notice how the taller apartment buildings don't go out to the corner.  There is just this one, low building with a pizza shop in it right on the corner.

ここは１１０thストリートとコランバスアベニュー（９thアベニュー）の南東角。以前９thアベニュー高架鉄道はここで右を（東）曲がって９thアベニューから８thアベニューに進んでから北上し続けた。ここでは８thアベニューは坂道になるので、その坂を避けるためにこういうふうに作ったわけ。鉄道があったせいで、角に高い建物ができなくて、それは現在まで続いてそうである。ご覧の通り、角には低いピザ屋しかない。奥の高い建物はみんな変なアングルになっている。この高架鉄道がなくなってからすでに60年以上も経ったのに、まだ目で見えるように影響が残っているのはすごいのだ！
